Dutton Ranch Season 1 Episode 2 Recap & Review: Rip Makes a Risky Move

Episode 2 of Dutton Ranch slows the pace slightly after the dramatic premiere, but the tension only grows stronger. The story focuses heavily on distrust, buried secrets, and the dangerous rivalry beginning to form between the Duttons and the Jackson family. By the end of the episode, it becomes obvious that neither side is willing to back down.

The episode opens eight days after the devastating fire. Rip and the others are temporarily staying at the Western Inn while trying to rebuild their operation. Although Montana still feels like home, the Duttons are now focused on surviving in Texas and creating a fresh start before their problems completely consume them.

Rip manages to secure a ranch property in Texas, but the land comes with complications. The Jackson family has reportedly wanted the ranch for almost twenty years. However, the current owner, Jeanie, refuses to sell it to them because she believes the Duttons will actually respect the land and preserve its spirit.

That decision immediately creates friction between both families.

Later, Rip and Beth attend a livestock auction where the Jacksons also happen to be present. Beth and Beulah barely exchange words, yet their icy stares say enough. Neither woman appears intimidated by the other, and the atmosphere becomes increasingly uncomfortable every time they share the same space.

Beth’s attention soon shifts toward the ranch’s slaughterhouse issue. Everett McKinney approaches her with a possible solution, mentioning a small facility near San Antone operated by a man named Claudio. The location is far from perfect, but Beth agrees to visit anyway.

When she meets Claudio, the interaction goes far better than expected. Claudio runs a modest operation with only a handful of employees, but he understands the business and speaks Beth’s language. Their conversation feels practical and direct, suggesting that this partnership may become important moving forward.

Meanwhile, Rip realizes the ranch needs additional workers. He decides to bring in Zachariah Moss, a recovering alcoholic recommended by Azul. Zachariah promises he’s trying to turn his life around and stay sober. Rip remains cautious but eventually gives him an opportunity to prove himself.

Elsewhere, the mystery surrounding Wes continues to grow.

Whitney arrives at the Jackson barn house with her child, desperate to find out what happened to her husband. Joaquim carefully avoids revealing anything suspicious and attempts to calm her concerns, but Whitney quickly notices his strange behavior. Unwilling to accept vague answers, she later files a missing person report with the authorities.

The pressure surrounding Wes’ disappearance begins affecting everyone connected to the situation. Chet, in particular, struggles to stay calm and receives a harsh warning from Beulah during an intense conversation. Things become even worse when they discover that Wes’ body is no longer hidden at the Edwards Ranch.

That revelation sends panic through the group.

Although Rob-Will has already been pushed aside from the family, the missing corpse remains a major threat hanging over everyone involved. The longer the body remains undiscovered, the more unpredictable the situation becomes.

Away from the growing conflict, Carter continues getting closer to Oreana. Their relationship develops further throughout the episode, though Oreana constantly keeps him at a distance emotionally. She appears interested in him one moment before suddenly becoming cold and withdrawn the next.

Everything changes after she receives texts from someone saved as “Grandma B.”

Oreana abruptly leaves and tells Carter she already has a boyfriend. Soon afterward, the episode reveals that Beulah is actually her grandmother.

The reveal adds another layer to the family drama. Oreana clearly resents the Jackson family and especially dislikes Beulah’s attempts to control her future. With Rob-Will, her father, currently in rehab, Beulah wants Oreana to become more involved in the family business and carry on the family legacy.

Oreana, however, wants a completely different life.

That conflict makes her one of the more interesting characters in the series so far. She feels trapped between loyalty to her family and the desire to escape from them entirely. Her growing bond with Carter only complicates matters further.

Near the end of the episode, Beth introduces Rip to Everett. The two men quickly find common ground while discussing ranch life and Beth’s personality. For a brief moment, things almost seem peaceful.

Then the episode delivers its biggest reveal.

Rip has secretly been storing Wes’ body in a frozen barn.

Late at night, Rip quietly transports the corpse away from the ranch and dumps it elsewhere, likely hoping to redirect suspicion toward the Jackson family before the police investigation gains momentum.

Episode Review

Episode 2 does an excellent job expanding the world of the series while steadily increasing the tension between both families. Instead of relying on major action scenes, the episode focuses more on emotional pressure, hidden agendas, and dangerous decisions.

Beth and Beulah continue to stand out as the strongest rivalry in the show right now. Both characters are fiercely stubborn and unwilling to surrender control, making every interaction between them feel intense even when very little is actually said.

The episode also improves several supporting characters. Zachariah’s introduction adds depth to the ranch storyline, while Oreana’s connection to the Jackson family gives her storyline far more emotional weight than expected.

Rip moving Wes’ body may ultimately become the turning point for the entire season. Up until now, the conflict has mostly stayed personal and contained. But once the investigation deepens, it feels inevitable that both families will be dragged into something much uglier.

Overall, Episode 2 successfully builds anticipation for the episodes ahead. The show is carefully stacking secrets, lies, and resentment on top of each other, creating the sense that a major disaster is only a matter of time.
