Trouble Begins at Fraser’s Ridge

Outlander Season 8 Episode 5 Review: Roger Faces War as Jamie Fights Back

The episode opens with a quiet moment at Fraser’s Ridge. Jamie and Claire are tending to their beehives while Buck spends time entertaining Jem, Mandy, and Fanny. The Frasers have welcomed Buck warmly into the family circle, though they continue hiding the truth about his parents’ deaths.

Their peaceful morning quickly changes when Aaron Whitaker arrives unexpectedly. Grateful to Claire for helping save his wife during childbirth, Aaron brings Jamie an alarming warning. While out hunting, he overheard Loyalists discussing a plan involving Cunningham and Partland’s militia.

According to Aaron, they intend to ambush Jamie and deliver him to Commander Ferguson, who plans to execute him publicly.

The news confirms Jamie’s fears that the political unrest around the Ridge is becoming far more dangerous.

In Savannah, Brianna works on a portrait of Amaranthus and young Trevor while the sounds of distant cannon fire echo across the city.

The ongoing battle nearby leaves Bree deeply worried about Roger’s safety. William notices her anxiety and attempts to comfort her, leading to a surprisingly emotional conversation about Jamie.

Brianna explains that she understands William’s confusion better than anyone. Like him, she once struggled after learning that the man who raised her was not her biological father. She admits that discovering Jamie’s existence made her feel lost and betrayed at first.

Still, Bree says everything changed after spending time with Jamie and truly understanding who he was. Her honesty gives William a rare moment of reassurance during an emotionally difficult time.

Their friendship continues becoming one of the season’s most unexpectedly enjoyable dynamics.

Back at the Ridge, Jamie meets with Claire and Buck to prepare for Cunningham’s expected attack.

They believe Cunningham will wait until after the Lodge meeting, knowing weapons are forbidden during the gathering. Jamie carefully assigns responsibilities to his allies. Buck and Kezzie are sent to watch Partland’s militia movements, while Josiah leaves to bring back additional support referred to as “the devil.”

Even with death potentially approaching, Jamie remains remarkably calm. He continues trusting the prophecy surrounding his fate, believing it means his time has not yet arrived.

Claire, however, is far less comfortable relying on destiny.

Outside Savannah, Roger prepares alongside the Continental Army before battle begins.

Before marching out, he writes a heartfelt letter to Brianna explaining why he feels compelled to remain with the soldiers. Roger reflects on his father’s experiences during World War II and finally understands the burden of responsibility that once drove him to fight.

On the battlefield, Roger meets a young drummer named Cristophe, who is clearly terrified by the coming conflict. Roger reassures him that things will be alright, though the battle soon proves otherwise.

British cannons devastate the Continental forces almost immediately. Roger witnesses countless injuries and deaths as chaos spreads throughout the battlefield.

One wounded soldier dies while Roger desperately tries to help him. Later, Roger discovers Cristophe severely injured after being shot in the neck. He carries the young man back to camp, where Denzell Hunter is working tirelessly among the wounded.

Cristophe asks Roger to pray for him before losing consciousness.

Emotionally overwhelmed, Roger returns to the fighting but is caught near a cannon explosion that sends him crashing to the ground. As he loses awareness, he remembers falling into his father’s arms as a child, creating one of the episode’s most emotional moments.

The Lodge meeting finally arrives, and tension fills the air immediately.

Josiah still hasn’t returned, causing Claire to fear the worst. Jamie, however, refuses to show weakness. Inside the Lodge, Cunningham repeatedly attempts to provoke him publicly, but Jamie remains composed throughout the confrontation.

Meanwhile, one of the Ardsmuir men deliberately stretches out the closing prayer long enough for Jamie to slip outside unnoticed and retrieve a hidden gun that Lizzie secretly placed nearby.

At home, Claire prepares her medical tools for the violence she knows is coming. Elspeth joins her, insisting her son never intended to kill Jamie. Claire clearly doubts that claim but focuses on preparing for the inevitable injuries.

Once darkness falls, a heavy storm finally gives Jamie’s men their opportunity to strike.

Using the rain and thunder as cover, Jamie’s militia quietly attacks the Loyalists and confiscates their weapons. During the chaos, Jamie tracks Cunningham to the emporium, where the two men engage in a violent confrontation.

Frustrated that his plan has failed, Cunningham finally abandons all restraint and points a gun directly at Jamie.

Before he can fire, Buck suddenly appears and shoots Cunningham from behind.

The dramatic rescue not only saves Jamie’s life but also cements Buck’s growing loyalty to the Fraser family.

After the battle in Savannah ends, Brianna still has no information about Roger’s condition. Determined to find him herself, she prepares to visit the military camp, and William offers to escort her.

Later that evening, William encounters Amaranthus outside the pavilion. During their conversation, he admits he has been thinking seriously about marriage and family. He even discusses the possibility of passing his title to her son.

Amaranthus responds playfully, suggesting they spend the night together before making such serious decisions. However, William insists marriage should come first because it is the honorable path.

The conversation eventually turns romantic, and the two finally sleep together.

The scene leaves lingering questions about Amaranthus’ true intentions moving forward.

Back at Fraser’s Ridge, the injured Cunningham is brought to Claire for emergency treatment.

Although Elspeth remains angry with Jamie, Claire forces her to help during surgery. Cunningham survives the operation, though his injuries may leave him permanently unable to walk.

The following day brings long-awaited relief when Brianna finally reunites with Roger at the military camp. Their emotional reunion becomes one of the episode’s strongest scenes.

Roger also learns that Cristophe survived his injuries thanks to Denzell’s treatment.

After Roger and Bree leave together, William and Denzell unexpectedly encounter Ben. William initially reacts with overwhelming happiness and hugs him immediately. But once the emotional shock fades, anger takes over and William punches him.

The sudden reaction highlights just how emotionally unstable William has become recently.

The episode closes with the arrival of the mysterious figure Jamie requested earlier.

The so-called “devil” turns out to be Cleveland, who jokingly comments on how amusing it is that Jamie finally accepted his assistance.

Claire, however, is visibly annoyed by his arrival, hinting that more conflict may soon follow.

Episode Review

“Send for the Devil” does an excellent job balancing war drama, family tension, and emotional character moments without losing momentum.

Roger’s battlefield storyline stands out as the emotional core of the episode. His struggle to process violence while trying to comfort others gives the hour genuine emotional weight. The flashback involving his father also adds another meaningful layer to his journey.

Jamie’s storyline at Fraser’s Ridge delivers suspense and satisfying payoff, especially with Buck’s heroic intervention. Buck continues proving himself as one of the season’s most unexpectedly valuable characters.

Meanwhile, Brianna and William’s growing friendship remains incredibly compelling. Their scenes together bring warmth and emotional honesty to an otherwise tense episode.

The only storyline that still feels uncertain involves Amaranthus. The series continues hinting that she may be more manipulative than she appears, but it has not fully committed to revealing her true motivations yet.

Overall, Episode 5 successfully mixes action, emotion, and character development while continuing to build anticipation for the second half of Outlander’s final season.
