The WONDERfools Episode 5 Recap: Secrets, Heart Transplants, and an Unexpected Betrayal
Episode 5 of The WONDERfools wastes no time picking up from the previous cliffhanger. Chae-ni suddenly wakes up alive beneath the glowing Northern Lights, leaving Un-jeong completely stunned. Before he can even understand what’s happening, he collapses from exhaustion directly into her arms. Meanwhile, Chae-ni rushes back to the junkyard and discovers Ro-bin unconscious nearby, proving just how violent the confrontation truly was.

Elsewhere, tensions rise between Ho-ran and Pal-ho after the failed mission. Ho-ran openly criticizes him for allowing Un-jeong to injure him so badly, especially after noticing the strange defect spreading through his arm. She warns that the condition is slowly destroying his body, but Ju-ran quickly intervenes before the argument escalates further. During the conversation, Ho-ran briefly remembers her younger days with Un-jeong, hinting that her feelings toward him remain complicated.
Back at the apartment, Chae-ni and Ro-bin carry the unconscious Un-jeong home and help him recover. While treating him, they discover multiple scars and injuries across his body, revealing how much suffering he has hidden from everyone.
The next day, Gyeon-un and Ro-bin go out to buy medicine and discuss the danger surrounding them. They realize Pal-ho is actively hunting down defective variants, which means none of them are truly safe anymore. The conversation leaves both of them deeply worried about what could happen next.
At the same time, Jun-mo grows increasingly suspicious about recent events. Frustrated that Chae-ni refuses to explain anything, he decides to investigate the junkyard himself. Once there, he notices bloodstains and signs of a violent struggle, confirming that something far bigger is happening behind the scenes in Haeseong.
Meanwhile, Chae-ni stays close to Un-jeong as he suffers through disturbing nightmares. During his sleep, he calls out desperately for his mother, and Chae-ni gently comforts him. The scene quietly strengthens the emotional connection forming between them.
Later that night, Jeon-bok catches Chae-ni sneaking out of the house. Even though she tries stopping her, Chae-ni still leaves and heads back to Un-jeong’s apartment. When Un-jeong wakes up later, he notices that she secretly left medicine and supplies behind for him.
The following day, Chae-ni, Gyeon-un, and Ro-bin wait for Un-jeong outside City Hall. The moment he arrives, he immediately tries distancing himself from them again. However, Chae-ni stubbornly refuses to let him walk away and insists that all four of them should work together moving forward. Watching them from afar, Ho-ran becomes visibly jealous seeing Chae-ni getting closer to Un-jeong.
Eventually, Un-jeong takes the group back to the hidden training room and resumes helping them control their abilities. However, the session is interrupted when Ho-ran suddenly appears. Using her powers, she traps Chae-ni, Gyeon-un, and Ro-bin inside terrifying hallucinations while confronting Un-jeong directly about the mysterious Child of Eternity.
Despite Ho-ran’s pressure, Un-jeong refuses to cooperate with her. He breaks her control over the others, forcing her to retreat in frustration.
That evening, Un-jeong finally tells Chae-ni the truth about the Child of Eternity. He explains that the child possessed a heart that could never truly die. He then asks Chae-ni whether she underwent heart surgery as a child, shocking her completely. Although she initially dismisses the idea, Un-jeong insists that Jeon-bok was connected to the experiments conducted at Hawondo Lab.
Unable to ignore his words, Chae-ni confronts Jeon-bok after returning home. Eventually, Jeon-bok confesses the horrifying truth. Following the Hawondo Lab fire, the Child of Eternity survived with severe brain damage while the heart continued functioning. After the child eventually died, the heart was transplanted into Chae-ni, who had been terminally ill at the time.
Devastated by the revelation, Chae-ni searches through archived reports and old newspaper articles connected to Hawondo Lab. As she learns more about the orphan children who were experimented on, she becomes overwhelmed with guilt and sadness.
Later, Un-jeong quietly follows Chae-ni after seeing her alone outside. Chae-ni blames herself for the tragedies connected to the experiments, but Un-jeong reassures her that none of it was her fault.
Meanwhile, Jeon-bok privately speaks with Jun-mo about the junkyard incident, suggesting that the hidden truth surrounding Hawondo Lab is becoming harder to conceal.
Later that night, Chae-ni visits Un-jeong’s apartment again. The two share a quieter moment together while walking to a convenience store. During their conversation, Chae-ni talks about her transplant and fears surrounding it, but Un-jeong tells her to stop carrying responsibility for something she never chose.
One of the episode’s most emotional scenes comes when Ro-bin delivers food from Jeon-bok to Chae-ni. Chae-ni breaks down crying after realizing her grandmother still cares deeply for her. At the same time, Jeon-bok quietly cries alone while returning home. Although Chae-ni eventually goes back to the restaurant, she refuses to forgive Jeon-bok completely and says they both must live with the consequences of the past.
Not long afterward, Chae-ni and Ro-bin suddenly move into Un-jeong’s apartment without asking permission, bringing some much-needed comedic energy into the episode. The next day, Un-jeong resumes their training and discovers that Chae-ni’s teleportation powers react to her heart rate. By giving her caffeine, he successfully helps her activate her powers more consistently.
At one point, Chae-ni grabs his hand and accidentally teleports both of them to a beach. The moment feels surprisingly warm and intimate, highlighting how close they have become.
Later, Chae-ni secretly organizes a birthday celebration for Un-jeong with help from Ro-bin and Gyeon-un. While buying a cake that evening, she unexpectedly runs into Un-jeong, and the two spend more time bonding together. During the conversation, Un-jeong admits he does not even know whether he truly has a mother.
Chae-ni promises that she will stay beside him no matter what happens.
But the episode suddenly takes a dark turn.
Without warning, Un-jeong injects Chae-ni with a mysterious drug, causing her to lose consciousness instantly. Moments later, Dr Ha’s followers abduct her, revealing that Un-jeong has been secretly cooperating with them.
In the final scenes, Un-jeong explains Chae-ni’s abilities to Dr Ha and reveals that her powers are connected to her heart rate. However, he carefully avoids mentioning the caffeine discovery, hinting that he may still be hiding his true intentions.
Episode 5 Review
Episode 5 delivers one of the strongest cliffhangers in the series so far. The reveal about Chae-ni’s heart transplant finally answers several lingering mysteries while also making the Hawondo Lab storyline even darker.
The biggest surprise, however, is definitely Un-jeong’s betrayal. The drama spent several episodes building trust and emotional chemistry between him and Chae-ni, so seeing him suddenly hand her over to Dr Ha feels genuinely shocking.
At the same time, some emotional reactions in this episode feel slightly exaggerated. Chae-ni blaming herself for receiving the transplant is emotionally understandable, but logically she was never responsible for the experiments or the decisions adults made around her.
Still, the episode succeeds where it matters most: keeping the tension high and making viewers desperate for answers. The ending raises major questions about Un-jeong’s real motives and whether he truly betrayed Chae-ni or is secretly trying to protect her from something bigger.
